Family Meetings: How We Make Them Fun, Functional, and Full of Snacks<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re hosting family meetings (or thinking about starting), here\u2019s a simple tip that will save your sanity and prevent future sibling showdowns<\/em>: Write down what was discussed<\/strong>. Having a record means no more \u201cBut you said<\/em> I could go to Grandma\u2019s with no bedtime!\u201d moments. It also gives everyone something to refer back to later\u2014especially helpful when life gets busy (or when selective memory kicks in).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s how our family does it\u2014with kids currently 7 and 10\u2014and how we turn \u201cmeeting time\u201d into something they actually look forward to. Spoiler alert: it involves snacks, shopping, and a whole lot of silliness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\ud83d\udccb Meeting Roles (Yes, Even the Kids Get Jobs!)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

We love giving everyone a role during the meeting\u2014it keeps things organized and<\/em> makes the kids feel super important. They’ve each done every role at least once (with a little help when needed).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\ud83e\udde0 The Meeting Leader:<\/strong>
Keeps us on task and takes notes. We use The Trip Clip<\/a><\/strong> to build our agenda\u2014bonus: it lets you add clipart next to the words so even early readers can follow along. (Pro tip: kids LOVE being in charge. Who knew?)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\ud83d\uded2 The Store Owner:<\/strong>
Each week, the girls get a $5 allowance\u2014not tied to chores, but to help them learn budgeting and decision-making. I stock our \u201cfamily store\u201d with fun little finds from the Dollar Tree, Target\u2019s dollar section, or Walmart. The store owner adds up totals, gives change, and helps their siblings decide if they want to spend, save, or donate<\/strong> (they can choose places like St. Jude\u2019s or the Humane Society\u2014surprisingly, donating is often the top pick!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\ud83c\udf4e The Snack Maker:<\/strong>
This one takes a little prep ahead of time, but it\u2019s a hit. The assigned kiddo plans and serves a snack during the meeting. We’ve had everything from fruit kabobs to fancy popcorn mixes\u2014and yes, presentation counts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\ud83c\udf89 The Fun Planner:<\/strong>
They plan a family activity to close out the meeting. Past favorites: hide and seek, board games, a trip to an indoor play center, or completely made-up games with wild rules and silly names. Creativity is key here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s a general flow that works well for us\u2014adapt it to fit your crew!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Start on a positive note. Take a few minutes to recognize each other for kind, helpful, or awesome things done during the week. (Yes, even “didn’t punch your sister” counts.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. \ud83d\uddd3\ufe0f The Weekly Calendar<\/strong>
    Go over what’s coming up: work events, playdates, who’s making dinner, who’s taking the dog to the vet\u2014you get the idea. It helps everyone feel informed (and avoids last-minute meltdowns when surprises pop up).<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. \ud83d\udccc Family Discussion<\/strong>
    This is where we go through anything that\u2019s been added to our \u201cmeeting topics\u201d list (we keep it on the fridge). Everyone gets a chance to talk. We list pros and cons, and try to agree on a solution together. Also: a quick check-in on how things are going based on previous talks\u2014what\u2019s working? What needs a little extra attention?<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. \ud83d\udecd\ufe0f Shopping at the Family Store<\/strong>
    Time to spend (or save!) that allowance. Items are labeled with prices or we just know them ahead of time. Encourage kids to think about longer-term goals or practice dividing money into spend\/save\/donate<\/strong> buckets.<\/li>\n\n\n\n

    The best part. Let the snack maker shine and serve their treat!<\/li>\n\n\n\n
